Black is the opposite of white, it represents proficiency and maturity.

It also marks the end of one path (the coloured belt ranks) and the beginning of a whole new level of training.

The black belt symbolizes the coming together of all the previous coloured belts and all grades of knowledge to form a degree.

There are nine degrees of black belt.
